Sending and Saving Photos

How to send photos by text, save photos people send you, and back them up so they’re never lost.

Photos are one of the best parts of having a smartphone. Here’s how to share them and keep them safe.

Send a photo by text message

  1. Open your Messages app and the conversation with the person.
  2. iPhone: tap the + button next to the typing box, then Photos. Android: tap the + or picture icon.
  3. Tap the photo you want, then tap the send arrow.

Share from your photo album

  1. Open Photos (iPhone) or Google Photos / Gallery (Android).
  2. Tap a photo to open it, then tap Share (iPhone: a square with an up arrow).
  3. Choose how to send it: Messages, Mail, WhatsApp, and more.

Save a photo someone sent you

  1. iPhone: In Messages, press and hold the photo, then tap Save.
  2. Android: Tap the photo to open it, then tap the three dots or download icon and choose Save.
  3. WhatsApp: Photos usually save automatically. If not, open the photo, tap the three dots or Share, and choose Save.

Back up your photos so they’re never lost

  1. iPhone: Settings → tap your name → iCloud → Photos, and turn on syncing.
  2. Android: Open Google Photos, tap your profile picture, and turn on Backup.
  3. Free storage is limited, so you may be offered a small paid plan once you have many photos.
