Video Calling the Grandkids: FaceTime, WhatsApp, and Google Meet

How to make a video call with FaceTime, WhatsApp, or Google Meet, so you can see the faces you love.

Seeing someone’s face makes a call special. Which app to use depends on what phones your family has. When in doubt, just ask them which app they use!

FaceTime (iPhone and iPad to iPhone and iPad)

  1. Open the Phone app or Contacts and find the person.
  2. Tap their name, then tap the video camera button labeled FaceTime.
  3. Hold the phone at arm’s length so they can see your face.
  4. Tap the red button to hang up.
  5. Tip Family with Android phones can join if you send them a FaceTime link: open FaceTime → Create Link.

WhatsApp (works on iPhone and Android)

  1. Install WhatsApp from the App Store (iPhone) or Play Store (Android) and sign up with your phone number.
  2. Open WhatsApp and tap the chat with the person.
  3. Tap the video camera icon at the top of the screen.
  4. To end, tap the red phone button.

Google Meet (iPhone, Android, or computer)

  1. Install Google Meet (it comes built into many Android phones).
  2. Open it and tap New or Call, then choose the person.
  3. Or, if someone sent you a meeting link, just tap the link and choose Join.

For a great call

  1. Sit facing a window or lamp so your face is lit.
  2. Prop the phone up against something so your arm doesn’t get tired.
  3. Use Wi-Fi if you can, so the picture is clearer.
